Arsenal knocked out of League Cup by fourth-tier minnow in all-time upset
BREAKING: Arsenal knocked out of the Carabao Cup by fourth-tier Fleetwood Town 5-3 on penalties, one of the biggest cup upsets in years.
Arsenal just got knocked out of a cup by the eighteenth best team in England's fourth division.
Fleetwood Town, eighty four places below them on the pyramid, beat the Premier League champions five three on penalties in the Carabao Cup. And look at these scenes, that's what it means to a League Two club. Fleetwood had two shots on goal all night. One of them went in, a twenty first minute strike from Aaron Loupalo-Bi. Viktor Gyökeres levelled it after the break, but Arsenal never found a second, teenager Max Dowman got sent off late, and in the shootout Fleetwood buried all five while Arsenal blinked.
Two details I love. Play stopped for eight minutes because a drone was hovering over the pitch. And Fleetwood's ground is called Highbury. Arsenal travelled to Highbury and lost. You could not write it.
The champions visit Liverpool this weekend with that one still stinging.
