President Trump's response came fast and it wasn't subtle. We're going to hit them hard, his words. And within hours of that statement, Iran's Revolutionary Guard said its air defences intercepted an American MQ-9 drone over the eastern Strait of Hormuz. So the escalation is already underway, on both sides, in real time.

These pictures show Iranian military vessels in the Gulf, the stretch of water where all of this keeps flashing over. A fifth of the world's oil moves through that strait, and it's now the front line again.
