Israel destroys Hezbollah tunnel network in south Lebanon, triggering 4.1-magnitude tremor
BREAKING: Israel says it has destroyed a key Hezbollah tunnel network beneath southern Lebanon's Ali al-Taher ridge, triggering a 4.1-magnitude tremor recorded by the US Geological Survey.
An explosion in southern Lebanon registered as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. Not a strike, a demolition. Israel says it destroyed a Hezbollah tunnel network running more than two kilometres beneath the Ali al-Taher ridge, and the blast was big enough for the US Geological Survey to log it as seismic activity.
Prime Minister Netanyahu and his defence minister called it strategic infrastructure built over two decades with Iranian funding, and said its destruction completes operational control of the ridge, above and below ground. The army says the tunnels held dozens of Iranian-made rockets, missiles and drones, plus a command centre for Hezbollah's Badr unit.
Residents in Nabatieh felt the ground shake in their homes. One woman told AFP everything simply moved. And the wider picture is heavy. Beirut says Israeli strikes have killed more than 4,300 people since March, and after a summer lull, the strikes are intensifying again.
