A magnitude 7.4 earthquake has struck Colombia.

The worst of it is centred on the Pereira region, in the country's coffee belt, and the early reports are hard to hear. Deaths confirmed, injuries mounting, and buildings brought down across the area. A 7.4 is a major quake anywhere, and it hit a part of Colombia where hundreds of thousands of people live in the immediate zone.

Amid the rubble, there are moments of hope. This picture shows rescue workers celebrating after pulling a survivor from a collapsed building, and those teams are working right now, hour by hour, knowing the first day after a quake is when the most lives get saved.

President Gustavo Petro's government now faces a national emergency response, and the full scale of this will only become clear in the coming days. The numbers we have tonight are early, and they will change.
