14 Newborns Die in Hospital Fire in Pakistan’s Capital
BREAKING: 14 newborns killed in a fire at Islamabad's largest hospital, with the blaze breaking out on the third floor.
Fourteen newborn babies are dead after a fire at a hospital in Islamabad.
The blaze broke out on the third floor of the city's largest hospital, the floor where the neonatal unit sits. These are the smallest patients a hospital has, infants in incubators who could not be moved fast enough.
You can see the emergency response here, ambulances and crews at the hospital entrance as staff worked to evacuate the wards. This is Pakistan's capital, and this was its biggest medical facility, the place families across the region are sent when a birth gets complicated.
What we don't yet know is how the fire started, or why a ward full of newborns was left so exposed on an upper floor. Those answers will come, and families will demand them.
Fourteen children who were days old, gone in a single night.
