5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes Japan, injuring at least 37
JUST IN: At least 37 people injured after a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck eastern Japan, with the prime minister urging residents to stay alert for further strong aftershocks.
The injury count from that earthquake in eastern Japan has more than doubled. At least 37 people are now confirmed hurt.
The quake measured 5.9, strong enough to throw people off their feet and send objects flying indoors. You can see the scene here, a station in eastern Japan lit up in the aftermath, trains held, platforms checked, the ordinary night suddenly not ordinary at all.
The prime minister has been direct about what comes next. Stay alert. Strong aftershocks can follow a quake like this for days, and they can do damage of their own, especially to buildings already weakened by the first shock. Emergency crews are still assessing, which means that number of 37 may not be the final one.
Japan is the most earthquake-prepared country on earth, and it still ended the night with dozens injured. That tells you everything about the force of this one.
