Woeful Spurs easily beaten at Brentford despite big-spending summer

BREAKING: Tottenham thrashed 3-0 at Brentford on the opening day, a woeful start despite their big-spending summer under Roberto De Zerbi.

Three nil. Tottenham's shiny new era lasted precisely one afternoon.

Brentford took them apart on opening day, and the pictures don't lie. There's the home side celebrating, again and again, in front of a Spurs team that spent the whole summer writing cheques. And look at the away bench here. That is not the face of a project. That's the face of a group of expensive strangers who met each other on Tuesday.

Roberto De Zerbi came in with a big reputation and an even bigger budget, and his first ninety minutes as Tottenham manager produced no goals, three conceded, and a very long coach ride back across London. Money buys players. It clearly hasn't bought a team yet.

One game in, and the most expensive summer in the club's recent memory already looks like the most awkward. De Zerbi's honeymoon ended before the wedding photos came back.
