Canada to announce response to Trump's new tariffs
BREAKING: Canada to hit US with retaliatory tariffs effective Sep 8 after PM Mark Carney rejected what he called a 'bad deal', escalating an all-out trade war.
Canada is hitting back at Trump's tariffs, and the date is September 8.
Prime Minister Mark Carney stood up and called the American offer a bad deal, flat out, and said Ottawa won't sign it. Here he is making the announcement, and there was nothing diplomatic about the body language. Retaliatory tariffs on American goods go live in two weeks.
Think about what that means. The two largest trading partners on the continent, economies stitched together by decades of supply chains, now lobbing tariffs at each other like it's a contest. Washington moved first, Ottawa just answered, and neither side is blinking yet.
Two weeks is a lifetime in a trade war though. That gap between now and September 8 isn't an accident, it's a window for someone to pick up the phone. The question is whether anyone in the White House wants to.
A bad deal rejected, and a border that just got a lot more expensive.
