Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson wins Nobel Prize in literature
JUST IN: Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson wins the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Anne Carson just won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The Canadian poet and essayist, the woman who turned ancient Greek into something that reads like it was written yesterday, now has the biggest prize in the business. You can see her here, one of the rare times she's actually out in public, because this is a writer who treats interviews like dental work.
The announcement came from the Swedish Academy in Stockholm this morning, and honestly, her name has been on the shortlist chatter for years. Bookmakers put her near the top almost every October, and every October the Academy swerved. Not this time.
She becomes the first Canadian to take the literature prize since Alice Munro, and the medal comes with a cheque north of a million dollars. For a poet, that's the plot twist of the decade.
