Dow tumbles more than 500 points as Middle East tensions rise, selling broadens beyond tech: Live updates

BREAKING: The Dow tumbles more than 500 points as Middle East tensions rise and the sell-off broadens beyond tech, with US oil topping $100 a barrel.

The Dow just shed more than 500 points, and this time it isn't the tech names bleeding.

The selling spread on Friday to the places money usually hides. Consumer staples, utilities, healthcare, all lower. You can see the mood on the floor here, and it's grim. American Express dropped more than 3 percent after those AI-driven job cuts, Caterpillar and Goldman Sachs added to the pain. The Dow finished down 515 points, about 1 percent, while the S&P slipped slightly and the Nasdaq actually eked out a gain.

The driver is oil. US crude topped 100 dollars a barrel, with West Texas at 102 and Brent above 116, after reports that the US and Israel are drawing up fresh strikes on Iran, and Iran saying it will hit back.

One fund manager put it plainly, investors have been sprinting from tech to safety for two weeks, and eventually you run out of people willing to sprint. On a day crude crossed 100, there was nowhere left to hide.
