'I'm very sad and disappointed'
BREAKING: World No 1 Jannik Sinner withdraws from the US Open with a right knee injury, saying he is 'very sad and disappointed'.
The world number one just pulled out of the US Open. Jannik Sinner won't play in New York, a right knee injury has beaten him before anyone on tour could.
He hasn't hit a competitive ball since lifting Wimbledon in July, his fifth Slam, and you can see him there at his imperious best. He skipped Canada, skipped Cincinnati, all to be ready for Flushing Meadows. Then he got back on court in Monte Carlo this week and the knee gave him his answer. His words, very sad and disappointed, New York has a special place in my heart.
And the timing is almost cruel. Carlos Alcaraz announced his comeback from a wrist injury just one day earlier. The man who beat Sinner in last year's final now walks into this tournament as the highest ranked player in the draw.
The two best players in tennis, and only one of them will be in New York.
