In a Major Boost for the Right, Another Bolsonaro Nears Brazil’s Presidency
NEW: Flavio Bolsonaro leads the first round of Brazil's presidential election, setting up a runoff against Lula on October 25 and putting another Bolsonaro on the brink of the presidency.
Another Bolsonaro is one round away from running Brazil.
Flavio Bolsonaro, the senator son of Jair, led the first round of Brazil's presidential election, and that sets up a runoff against Lula on October 25. Three weeks. That's the whole fight now.
Remember the context here. Jair Bolsonaro is out of the picture, barred from office, and the family name was supposed to be politically radioactive after everything that followed the last election. Instead the son just topped a national vote. Lula has been here before, he's the great survivor of Brazilian politics, but surviving a first round and winning a runoff are two different sports.
Whoever takes October 25 governs two hundred million people and the biggest economy in Latin America. And right now, the man with the lead is named Bolsonaro.
