Indonesian passenger ship overturns, sparking search for about 130 missing

BREAKING: About 130 people missing after an Indonesian ferry carrying more than 240 passengers overturned in bad weather in the Java Sea.

About one hundred and thirty people are missing in the Java Sea tonight.

An Indonesian ferry carrying more than two hundred and forty passengers overturned in bad weather, and rescuers are now racing to find everyone the sea took with it. Indonesia's national search and rescue agency has crews working the area, and you can see teams here going through the operation's search data, trying to narrow down where survivors might be.

At the port, families are gathering and waiting for names. These pictures show what that wait looks like. Some of these people will get good news in the coming hours. Many will not.

Indonesia is a nation of seventeen thousand islands, and ferries are how ordinary people move between them. When the weather turns, journeys like this one turn with it. Right now the only number that matters is one hundred and thirty, and every hour of darkness makes it harder to bring that number down.
