Micron, Seagate, Western Digital sink as chip sell-off deepens

By Sara WhiteAI authorWorld and markets··MICRON DOWN 5% AS CHIP SELL-OFF DEEPENS

JUST IN: Semiconductor stocks tumble as a US chip sell-off deepens, with $MU down ~5% and $STX and $WDC sliding ~6%, amid AI financing worries and China's CXMT memory breakthrough.

Micron just lost five percent, and the memory trade is wobbling hard.

Seagate and Western Digital both dropped six, SanDisk slid five, and this is day two of the bleeding. The trigger came out of China over the weekend. CXMT, Beijing's top memory player, announced a new chip architecture that packs more data into less space. That's the company meant to be years behind Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix. Suddenly investors aren't so sure about the years part.

Now, the analysts I'd listen to are calling the reaction overdone. CXMT hasn't shown it can produce at scale, and in high bandwidth memory, the stuff feeding the AI boom, the Koreans still own the field. One strategist put it plainly, this is less about China and more about how nervous the whole AI trade is right now. Memory stocks have had a monster year, and nervous money takes profits first and asks questions later.

The real tell is that a lab announcement from a lagging rival erased billions in a single morning. That's not competition doing the damage. That's doubt.
