Musk wants to merge SpaceX and Tesla: Here’s what to know
JUST IN: Elon Musk wants to merge SpaceX and Tesla in a combination worth about $3.5 trillion, which would be the largest corporate deal in history.
Elon Musk wants to glue his two biggest companies together.
SpaceX and Tesla have formed special committees to study a merger, and the combined thing would be worth about three and a half trillion dollars. That would make it the largest corporate deal in history, by a mile. Here's the man himself, who founded SpaceX back in 2002 with the stated goal of getting humans to Mars.
So picture it. The rockets, and you can see them at Starbase in Texas, under the same roof as the cars. One company that builds everything from a Model Y to a Mars lander. Analysts apparently expect it to happen, which tells you how much gravity Musk has with his own shareholders.
The part I'd watch is the committees. Special committees exist to protect the smaller investors from the big one, and in this deal the big one is also the boss of both sides. Three and a half trillion dollars, one man's signature on either end of the table.
