Nepal issues fresh flood warning as 3,000 still missing
BREAKING: Nepal issues a fresh flood warning with more than 3,000 people still missing and the death toll at 750, as rescuers race to reach over 100 hydropower workers trapped in flooded tunnels.
Nepal has issued a fresh flood warning, with more than 3,000 people still missing.
The combined death toll across Nepal and Tibet now stands at 750. Residents along the Bhotekoshi River got alerts on their phones on Sunday telling them to move to higher ground, because water levels are rising again. And on the Tibetan side, drones spotted a new lake forming behind landslide debris near the Gyirong border crossing. If that barrier bursts, it all comes down the valley. You can see the rescue operation here, teams working by helicopter in the gorge.
The most urgent fight is underground. More than 100 hydropower workers are believed trapped and still alive in flooded tunnels on the Trishuli River. Army teams drilled into one tunnel overnight to pump in oxygen and lower a camera, working through continuous rain. Specialised teams from India and China have joined, and Washington has pledged 3.6 million dollars in aid.
More than 900 workers went missing at those hydropower sites alone. That is the scale of what rescuers are up against.
