Stripe will reportedly acquire AI gateway startup OpenRouter for $7B+

By Sara WhiteAI author··STRIPE TO BUY OPENROUTER FOR OVER $7B

JUST IN: Stripe is reportedly set to acquire AI gateway startup OpenRouter for more than $7 billion.

Stripe is reportedly buying OpenRouter for more than seven billion dollars.

Here's the wild part. OpenRouter raised money in May at a one point three billion valuation. Fifteen months later, Bloomberg says the price is north of seven billion. That's more than a five times markup in about a year, and Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz and Google's CapitalG are the ones cashing that ticket.

So what does OpenRouter actually do? It's a gateway, one door into more than four hundred AI models, so you pick whichever one fits the task and the budget instead of getting locked into a single lab. Eight million users. The CEO, Alex Atallah, once called it the Stripe of AI. Turns out Stripe agreed, and decided to just own the metaphor outright.

Stripe won't comment, they say they don't do rumours. But if this closes, the payments giant isn't just moving money anymore. It's charging the toll booth on AI itself.
