N Chandrasekaran isn't going anywhere. Tata Sons just handed him another five years as executive chairman.

And that's a reversal. Chandrasekaran had earlier decided not to seek reappointment, the exit was pencilled in, and now the board has undone all of it and locked him in for a full second act. Here he is, the man who's run India's biggest conglomerate since 2017.

Think about what sits on that desk. Steel, software, cars, airlines, salt to satellites as they say in Mumbai, all reporting up through Bombay House to one chairman. When the succession question at a group that size quietly disappears, it usually means one thing, nobody in the room could agree on who comes next.

So Tata bought itself five more years of continuity, and kicked the hardest question in Indian business down the road. The successor problem didn't get solved tonight. It got postponed.
