JUST IN: President Trump asks the US Supreme Court to let White House ballroom construction continue, after tearing down the East Wing for the $400 million project.

Quick recap. The East Wing of the White House got torn down last year, without notifying Congress, to make room for the project. You can see the scale of it here, that's the demolition from above. A federal district judge blocked further construction, an appeals court upheld that last Friday, and the injunction bites next Friday, August 21.

So the administration went straight to the top. And the legal argument is something. The Solicitor General told the justices this isn't a ballroom, it's an integrated military complex vital to national security. Trump says the roof will have a drone port. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, which brought the suit, calls it a transparent effort to evade the rule of law.

So one week from now, either the highest court in the land steps in, or the cranes at the White House go quiet.
