U.S. House votes to avoid government shutdown amid GOP hard-liner resistance

JUST IN: US House votes 370-48 to pass a stopgap spending measure to avert a government shutdown, funding the government through Dec. 11 despite GOP hard-liner resistance. The bill now heads to President Trump's desk.

The government stays open. The House voted 370 to 48 tonight.

It's a stopgap that keeps the lights on through December 11, and it now heads to President Trump's desk for a signature. The Senate already passed it back in August before everyone left for summer, so this was the last hurdle before the September 30 deadline.

Speaker Mike Johnson needed a two thirds majority to fast track it, which meant Democratic votes, and he got plenty. There he is taking the win, saying troops in harm's way won't miss a paycheck. The Freedom Caucus hated it though. Chip Roy complained it funds Planned Parenthood, and Andy Harris threatened to block the rest of the GOP agenda this week in protest. Nineteen Republicans voted no anyway. Didn't matter.

Here's what tells you everything. With midterms looming and polls pointing at a Democratic House, nobody wanted to campaign next to a shutdown. December 11 is when this fight comes back.
