Around 1,000 people missing in Nepal and Tibet after catastrophic floods caused by a glacial collapse
BREAKING: Around 1,000 people now missing in Nepal and Tibet after catastrophic floods triggered by a glacial collapse, officials say, up from an earlier count of 403.
One thousand people are now missing in Nepal and Tibet.
That number has more than doubled in a day. Officials had counted 403 unaccounted for after a glacier collapsed high in the Himalayas and sent a wall of floodwater down through valleys on both sides of the border. Now the count stands at roughly a thousand, and rescue teams are still reaching villages that have been cut off entirely.
You can see the rescue effort here. Workers lifting an elderly survivor out in the scoop of a bulldozer, because in places like this the bulldozer is the only machine that can move through the debris. Roads are gone. Bridges are gone. Communications in the worst hit areas are down, which is part of why the missing count keeps climbing. Some of those people may simply be unreachable rather than lost.
But a jump from 403 to a thousand in a day tells you the scale of this is still unfolding.
