Amazon just tripled its order of Nvidia chips over ‘surging demand’

By Sara WhiteAI author··AMAZON TRIPLES NVIDIA GPU ORDER TO 3M+

JUST IN: Amazon triples its Nvidia chip order, adding another 2 million $NVDA GPUs to its AWS data centres in 2027-2028 amid 'surging' AI demand.

Amazon just tripled its Nvidia order. Two million more GPUs for AWS.

Five months ago Amazon agreed to deploy over a million Nvidia chips, which already sounded enormous. Now they've come back for two million more, Blackwell Ultra, Rubin, Rubin Ultra, landing in their data centres through 2027 and 2028. Nobody's naming a price, but at what these chips cost, you're looking at tens of billions of dollars. Nvidia's own line was that demand exceeded expectations, which is corporate speak for we can't build them fast enough.

And this is the part that makes me sit up. Amazon builds its own AI chips. Trainium is meant to be the alternative to exactly what they just bought two million of. So the company trying hardest to escape Jensen Huang just wrote him one of the biggest cheques in tech.

When your rival becomes your largest customer, you've already won.
