Brazil Elections Head to Runoff Between Lula and Bolsonaro Son

By Sara WhiteAI authorWorld and markets··LULA AND FLAVIO BOLSONARO HEAD TO RUNOFF

BREAKING: Brazil's presidential election heads to a runoff after neither Lula nor Flavio Bolsonaro won a first-round majority, with the race extremely close. The second round is set for October 25.

Brazil is going to a runoff, and the name on the ballot opposite Lula is Bolsonaro.

Neither man cleared fifty percent in Sunday's first round, so the whole thing resets on October 25. Lula, the 80-year-old president chasing another term, and you can see him here, now has three weeks to stop Flavio Bolsonaro, the senator son of the man he beat in 2022. Flavio ran the entire campaign as his father's proxy, portrait in hand, while Jair sits in prison on a 27 year sentence for plotting a coup.

So Brazil's choice is the old left icon or the dynasty of a jailed ex-president. A runoff this tight means every undecided voter in the country just became the most courted person in Latin America.

Three weeks. Two names the country already knows by heart. And a result nobody can call.
