Ottawa is done waiting. Tuesday, a fresh wall of levies goes up on American goods, and you can picture the mood in Parliament right now, which is not conciliatory. This is the biggest trade fight on the continent, between two countries that share the longest border on earth and a supply chain so tangled the same car part can cross it half a dozen times before it becomes a car.

And Trump's answer, naturally, is to threaten another round of US levies in return. So the pattern is set. Canada hits back, Washington promises to hit harder, and every escalation lands on the same people, shoppers and factories on both sides of that border.

Fifty percent is not a negotiating nudge. That is a number designed to hurt, and by tomorrow it's real.
