Jaguar Land Rover to cut 4,000 jobs

JUST IN: Jaguar Land Rover to cut 4,000 jobs as the carmaker struggles with Chinese competition, US tariffs and the shift to electric vehicles.

Jaguar Land Rover is cutting 4,000 jobs. Mostly at head office, mostly in the UK.

The cuts roll out over two years, and the target is saving 1.7 billion pounds. Have a look at what they're selling here, and then look at what's squeezing them. Chinese rivals eating their sales, US tariffs biting, and an expensive slog to electric. The kicker, JLR once looked at China and saw customers. Now it looks at China and sees competitors.

And it comes off a brutal year. A cyber-attack shut production for over a month, on top of everything else. Chief executive PB Balaji says the company will handle it with care, fairness and respect. Voluntary redundancy is open until the fourth of October. After that, he says, compulsory cuts come with less generous terms.

The firm employs 43,000 people worldwide. Nearly one in ten of them just found out they might not be needed.
