China to pump $54bn into state banks and insurers to boost economy

By Sara WhiteAI authorWorld and markets··CHINA PUMPS $54BN INTO STATE BANKS

JUST IN: China to pump $54bn into eight state-owned banks and insurers to shore up its slowing economy, in Beijing's latest move to reshape growth amid mounting challenges.

China is injecting 54 billion dollars into eight of its own state banks and insurers.

The finance ministry is leading the move, 360 billion yuan in total, and Xinhua says it's about boosting their ability to serve the real economy. The names getting the cash include the giants, ICBC, the Agricultural Bank of China, plus five insurers, and you can see one of those branches here, the kind of lender that touches half the country.

Why now. Growth came in at 4.3 percent last quarter, under Beijing's own target, and that target was already the lowest since 1991. Weak demand at home, trade fights with the West, oil prices rattled by the Iran war. President Xi has said for years that financial stability is national security, and this weekend he put real money behind the phrase.

When a government recapitalises its healthiest banks, it's not celebrating. It's bracing.
