Assailant lunged at Democratic candidate for Ohio governor Amy Acton at fair, campaign says

BREAKING: An armed assailant lunged at Amy Acton, the Democratic candidate for Ohio governor, at the Canfield Fair, injuring several people; the suspect was arrested with multiple weapons and Acton was unharmed, her campaign says.

An armed man lunged at Amy Acton, Ohio's Democratic candidate for governor, at the Canfield Fair today.

Her campaign says the suspect knocked volunteers to the ground before he was arrested carrying multiple weapons. Acton herself was not hurt, but several people were injured. Her team says she's grateful for the swift police response and praying for their recovery.

Acton became a national figure as Ohio's health director during the pandemic, recruited by Republican Governor Mike DeWine, praised by many and bitterly resented by others. Now she's in one of the highest profile races in the country, against Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, with six weeks until the November election. Ramaswamy called the attack completely unacceptable, saying candidates should be able to meet voters without fearing violence.

Both parties condemned this within hours. The harder truth is that a candidate for governor was attacked at a county fair, in America, six weeks before an election.
