19th to victory! Antonelli sensationally wins thrilling Italian GP
BREAKING: Kimi Antonelli sensationally wins his home Italian Grand Prix from 19th on the grid, becoming the first Italian to win at Monza since 1966 after a race-long battle with Mercedes team-mate George Russell.
From 19th on the grid to winning at Monza. Kimi Antonelli just did the thing every Italian kid dreams about, and he did it at home.
He's the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix since 1966. Sixty years. Grid penalties for burning through his engine allocation had buried him in 19th, and nobody gave him a prayer. Then he carved through the field, and look at these two Mercedes going at it all afternoon, swapping the lead with Max Verstappen down those long straights.
Antonelli pitted under the Virtual Safety Car, came out fifteen seconds behind George Russell, and hunted him down on fresher tyres. He even ran wide at the first chicane with five laps left, then passed his own team-mate with three to go anyway. There he is on the podium, and the tifosi finally have something to sing about after Leclerc put his Ferrari in the wall.
The cold number underneath the party, Antonelli now leads Russell by 66 points, and Russell still has engine penalties of his own coming. This championship might already be decided.
