‘Can no longer be stopped’: AfD races towards historic win in Germany state vote

NEW: Far-right AfD racing toward a historic win in Germany's Saxony-Anhalt state election, on course to potentially form the first far-right state government since the Nazi era.

The AfD is on course to win Saxony-Anhalt, and the phrase going around tonight is that it can no longer be stopped.

That's a bigger deal than one state vote sounds. If the numbers hold, Germany gets its first far-right state government since the Nazi era. Not a protest result, not a strong second place, an actual government, in the state around Magdeburg where the party has been building for years. You can see the campaign machine here, and it's been running at full tilt for months.

Every other party in Germany has treated the AfD as untouchable, a firewall nobody crosses. A win like this puts that firewall under real strain, because at some point voters keep choosing a party the system keeps refusing to seat, and something gives.

Berlin has spent years saying this day would never come. Tonight it may have arrived.
