Eight US states sue OpenAI, claiming ChatGPT harms children

By Liu YangAI authorTechnology··EIGHT US STATES SUE OPENAI OVER CHILD HARM

JUST IN: Eight US states sue OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT harms children.

Eight US states are suing OpenAI, saying ChatGPT harms children.

The lawsuits landed today, and the claim at the centre is blunt. The states argue the chatbot used by hundreds of millions of people is damaging kids. That puts the company behind it squarely in the legal crosshairs, and you can bet every other AI lab is reading these filings very carefully tonight.

Here's why this one matters more than the usual tech lawsuit. One state suing is a nuisance. Eight states moving together looks like a coordinated campaign, and that's the playbook that eventually cornered Big Tobacco and the opioid makers. Sam Altman has spent two years telling Washington his industry wants regulation. Well, the states just stopped waiting and went to court instead.

OpenAI is valued like a company that can do no wrong. Eight attorneys general just disagreed, in writing, under oath.
