Fire engulfs Hitler’s teahouse ‘Eagle’s Nest’ in Germany; one arrested

BREAKING: Fire engulfs Hitler's former 'Eagle's Nest' mountain retreat in Bavaria, with one person arrested as firefighters battle the blaze.

The Eagle's Nest is on fire. Hitler's former mountain teahouse in the Bavarian Alps caught alight tonight, and police have already arrested one person.

You can see the scene here, firefighters working the blaze high above Berchtesgaden. The Kehlsteinhaus sits at nearly two thousand metres, perched on a ridge, which makes it a stunning viewpoint and an absolute nightmare to fight a fire at.

The building was a fiftieth birthday gift to Hitler from the Nazi party in 1939. Since the war it's been run as a restaurant and a tourist site, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors a year who come for the view and the history in equal measure. It survived Allied bombing raids and eight decades of debate about whether it should exist at all.

Now one arrest, a burning landmark, and investigators climbing a mountain to find out why. German police haven't said a word yet about motive.
