Live Updates: Nepal Roughly Doubles Number of Missing to 1,900 Amid Desperate Search for Survivors
NEW: Nepal roughly doubles its number of missing to 1,900 amid a desperate search for survivors, after some 900 people were reported missing from hydropower projects, with rescue efforts complicated by fears of new flooding.
Nepal has roughly doubled its count of the missing to one thousand nine hundred people.
The jump came almost overnight, after around nine hundred workers were reported missing from hydropower projects along flood-hit rivers. These are remote sites, high in the valleys, and in many cases nobody knew exactly how many people were on them until families started calling.
Rescue crews are working village by village, and you can see the scene here, families gathered as a helicopter comes in during the search for those hydropower workers. This is what the waiting looks like.
The search itself is now at risk. Authorities are warning of possible new flooding, which means the same water that took these people could force rescuers to pull back before they're found.
Nineteen hundred missing, and the number has only moved in one direction.
