Nepal-Tibet live: China warns lake formed by mudslide on Nepal border could breach

BREAKING: China warns a lake formed by a mudslide on the Nepal-Tibet border faces a 'high risk of breaching' and sending floodwaters downstream, with over 1,000 residents and tourists evacuated as water levels are set to rise for three days, peaking around September 1.

A lake on the Nepal-Tibet border is at high risk of breaching. That's the warning from Chinese authorities this morning, and more than a thousand people, residents and tourists, have already been evacuated.

The lake formed on Wednesday, when a wall of mud and debris hit the border hub of Gyirong in Tibet. These aerial pictures show what it did, a village partly buried under grey mud, homes destroyed.

Rescuers are using heavy machinery to clear roads into the disaster zone, and you can see that work here. But the forecast is bleak. With rain still falling, inflows of around three million cubic metres are expected over the next three days, peaking around September 1. If the lake breaches, that water goes straight downstream toward Gyirong Port and beyond.

This all follows the glacial collapse that sent floods tearing across Nepal and Tibet. At least 359 people are dead, and the search goes on for 1,300 still missing.
