Local ceasefire brokered by Melania Trump starts in southern Ukraine
JUST IN: A localized ceasefire brokered by US first lady Melania Trump takes effect in Russian-occupied southern Ukraine, as missile attacks resume in Kyiv.
A ceasefire brokered by Melania Trump is now in effect in southern Ukraine. Not the president. The first lady.
The truce is localized, covering parts of the Russian-occupied south, and it took hold this morning. Melania Trump has been personally involved in Ukraine diplomacy before, most notably on the return of Ukrainian children taken to Russia, and this appears to be an extension of that channel.
But the limits are already visible. As the guns went quiet in the south, missile attacks resumed in Kyiv. The capital was under fire even as the agreement took effect.
So the picture this morning is a war pausing in one region and continuing in another. A ceasefire that holds only where it was signed, while the rest of the country stays under attack. That is the hardest fact of the day.
