BREAKING: Several people injured in a sword attack at Brinell School in Fagersta, central Sweden, with one man arrested and eight nearby schools placed on lockdown.

Several people have been injured in a sword attack at a school in central Sweden. It happened at Brinell School in Fagersta, about 170 kilometres north west of Stockholm, just after two in the afternoon local time.

Police have arrested one man, and Swedish media report officers shot him in the leg. These are the scenes outside, emergency responders working the street while police searched the building. Eight nearby schools went into lockdown, and the whole Vastmanland region declared a state of high alert. Police say there's no ongoing danger to the public.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called it a serious incident and said the motive isn't known yet. What makes this land so heavily in Sweden is the memory. Eleven people died at a school in Orebro last year, the country's worst mass shooting, and a sword attack in Trollhattan killed a teacher and a pupil in 2015.

Brinell's roughly 500 students had been back from summer break for less than a week.
