Shooting at VSU injures 5, hours after freshmen welcome event

NEW: Police have arrested a 19-year-old in connection with the Virginia State University shooting that left five injured, as the campus lockdown is lifted.

Five people were shot at Virginia State University, just hours after the campus welcomed its freshmen.

This is the scene in Petersburg, Virginia, a historically Black university that had spent the day greeting new students, and by nightfall it was in lockdown. Police responded, the campus was sealed, and students who arrived this week for the start of their college lives spent the evening sheltering in place.

The latest from police is that a nineteen year old has been arrested in connection with the shooting, and the lockdown has now been lifted. Five people are injured. We don't yet have their conditions, or what led to the gunfire, and I won't guess at either.

What we do know is stark enough. A welcome event for freshmen, and five people shot before the first week of classes.
