Thompson was the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, shot dead in Manhattan in December 2024, a killing that stunned the country and set off a very uncomfortable national argument about health insurance. Mangione had been facing two prosecutions at once, a federal case and a New York state case, running in parallel. This plea settles the federal one. And here he is in court.

Now the legal ground shifts. The Guardian reports the guilty plea raises double jeopardy questions that could end the state case entirely. Being punished twice for the same act is exactly what that doctrine exists to prevent, and Mangione's lawyers will push that argument hard.

So the man who became a grim folk hero to some and a murderer to a jury of prosecutors may now face only one reckoning instead of two. New York's case against him could be over before it ever reaches trial.
