SpaceX deal to acquire spectrum license hammers shares of AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile

JUST IN: SpaceX agrees to buy a nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio from Grain Management to push Starlink deeper into US telecom, sending shares of $T, $VZ and $TMUS tumbling after hours.

SpaceX just bought its way into the American phone business, and the big three carriers felt it instantly.

Starlink's parent agreed tonight to buy a nationwide spectrum portfolio from Grain Management, up to fourteen megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band. That's prime low-band, the stuff that goes through walls and across countryside, exactly what a real mobile carrier needs. SpaceX said it openly, this paves the way for Starlink Mobile to become a major US carrier. Elon Musk called it a very big deal, and for once the man undersold something.

AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile all tumbled after hours, because the market just did the maths. A company with thousands of satellites overhead now owns ground spectrum too.

One catch, the FCC still has to approve it. But the message to the carriers landed tonight, your moat just got a hole in it.
