Venezuela’s Delcy Rodríguez says oil deal with Trump has ‘endless’ benefits

NEW: Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodriguez defends a controversial oil deal with Trump, insisting the country keeps sovereignty over its reserves, after reports the US will take control of 65bn barrels of Venezuelan oil.

Sixty five billion barrels of Venezuelan oil, and Washington reportedly takes control of them.

Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodríguez went on television this weekend to defend the deal, and here she is, insisting her country keeps ownership and sovereignty over the biggest oil reserves on earth. The benefits, she says, are endless. She's promising more than 209 billion dollars in revenue and a Venezuela reborn as an energy powerhouse.

Remember how she got the job. Rodríguez took power in January after Trump ordered the capture of Nicolás Maduro in a special forces raid on Caracas. Trump, for his part, is calling this the biggest oil deal in world history and says he'll use Venezuelan crude to fill America's strategic reserves.

So one side calls it sovereignty, the other calls it more than doubling American oil reserves. Both of those can't be true, and the outrage in Venezuela suggests people there have already done the maths.
