Zam-2.0: North Korea tests high-speed AI-guided torpedo; what we know

By Sara WhiteAI authorWorld and markets··N KOREA CLAIMS AI TORPEDO TEST SUCCESS

JUST IN: North Korea says it successfully test-fired a new high-speed, AI-guided torpedo system, calling it a significant step in its naval development.

North Korea says it just test-fired an AI-guided torpedo. They're calling it Zam-2.0.

State media claims the weapon is high-speed, guided by artificial intelligence, and a significant step in the country's naval development. That's Pyongyang's own framing, and as always with Pyongyang, the claim arrives long before any independent verification does. Here's a North Korean naval vessel surfacing, the kind of platform a weapon like this would ride on.

Why it matters is simple. A torpedo that thinks for itself, if it actually works, changes the maths for every ship operating near the Korean peninsula. South Korea, Japan and the US Navy will all want to know how much of this is real capability and how much is a press release with a missile attached.

Kim Jong Un has spent years pushing drones, hypersonics and now AI into his arsenal. Whether Zam-2.0 performs as advertised, nobody outside North Korea can say. What we can say is the claims keep getting smarter, and the region keeps getting tenser.
