BREAKING: A second powerful earthquake strikes Indonesia, following the magnitude 7.7 quake that triggered a tsunami alert and mass evacuations.

Indonesia has been hit by a second powerful earthquake. It comes just after the magnitude 7.7 quake that triggered a tsunami alert and sent thousands of people running for higher ground.

We covered the first quake earlier, and the damage from it is already severe. These pictures show locals clearing rubble by hand in the mountains, working through what's left of their homes. And here, emergency crews are moving through collapsed buildings, searching structure by structure.

A second strong quake this soon is the worst possible timing. Buildings weakened by the first shock can come down in the next one, and rescue teams already inside damaged structures are now at risk themselves. Aftershocks in a sequence like this can go on for days.

The first quake killed at least twenty people. The fear tonight is what this second one adds to that number.
