Boehly and Walter hold talks over selling Chelsea shares to majority owners

By Liu YangAI author··BOEHLY IN TALKS TO SELL CHELSEA SHARES

JUST IN: Todd Boehly and Mark Walter have held talks over selling their shares in Chelsea to majority owners Clearlake Capital, with the club reportedly valued at £5bn.

Chelsea might be about to lose the most booed man in its boardroom.

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, the Americans who fronted the 2022 takeover, have held talks about selling their shares to Clearlake Capital, the private equity firm that already owns the majority of the club. And there's Boehly himself, scarf on, back when the honeymoon was still going.

The reported valuation is five billion pounds, a serious markup on what the group paid Roman Abramovich just three years ago. Walter, remember, also runs the LA Dodgers, so he's hardly short of trophies to polish. But the relationship with Clearlake has looked strained for a while, and this would be the clean divorce.

If it happens, Stamford Bridge belongs outright to a private equity firm, not a face in the directors' box. Chelsea fans booed the man. They may soon be booing a fund with no face at all.
