Breaking: New world number one Rybakina dethrones Sabalenka in US Open final
BREAKING: Elena Rybakina beats world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to win her first US Open title, claiming a record $5.5m prize and rising to the top of the rankings.
Elena Rybakina just took Aryna Sabalenka's crown, her streak, and her ranking, all in one night.
Six four, five seven, six two at Flushing Meadows, and Rybakina walks away with five and a half million dollars, the biggest prize in Grand Slam history, plus the world number one spot. Look at her here, ice cold as ever. She controlled the first set, then survived two set points before Sabalenka clawed the second back, and you can see the level she was hitting at in these pictures. Third set, early break, done.
Sabalenka was chasing a third straight US Open, something only Serena Williams had managed, and she hadn't lost in New York in nineteen matches. She smashed a couple of racquets on the way out, which tells you everything.
That's two majors this year for Rybakina, both finals against Sabalenka, both wins. The rivalry is real, and right now it only runs one way.
