Buildings burn as French protests go into the night

BREAKING: France's protests rage into the night as masked demonstrators set fire to Limoges town hall, which officials say is now 'largely lost.'

Limoges town hall is burning, and officials say it is largely lost.

Witnesses describe masked protesters setting fire to the building after dark, and these pictures show the scale of it, flames pouring out of the roof while fire crews work below. A town hall that stood for over a century, gone in one night.

This isn't an isolated scene. In Paris there were fires, looting and tear gas as the cost-of-living protests rolled into another night, and an Al Jazeera reporter was struck on the head while covering it. The anger here started over prices and bills, and it's now burning through the buildings of the French state itself.

France has seen unrest before. What it hasn't seen in a long time is a city losing its town hall to its own citizens. That's where this country is tonight.
