Crypto.com-linked Cronos network halts after Tectonic exploit estimated at $75 million
BREAKING: Crypto. com-linked Cronos network halts after an estimated $75 million exploit on lending platform Tectonic, with the attacker manipulating the illiquid TONIC token to borrow against inflated collateral.
Seventy five million dollars gone, and an entire blockchain just hit the brakes.
Cronos, the network linked to Crypto. com, has been halted after an exploit on Tectonic, a lending platform that lives on the chain. And the method is old as crypto itself. The attacker pumped up TONIC, a token so thinly traded you could move it with pocket change, then used that inflated price as collateral to borrow real money against it. Fake value in, real value out, an estimated seventy five million dollars worth.
Halting the whole network is the nuclear option. It stops the bleeding, sure, but it also tells everyone holding assets on Cronos that the chain can simply be switched off. Decentralisation looks great right up until the moment somebody reaches for the pause button.
So the money's gone, the chain is frozen, and every lending protocol with an illiquid token as collateral just felt a chill. Someone knew exactly how cheap that door was to open.
