Ethiopia says it must defend itself against Eritrea's 'all-out invasion'
BREAKING: Ethiopia says it must defend itself against Eritrea's 'all-out invasion', as the two nations edge toward renewed conflict.
Ethiopia says Eritrea has launched an all-out invasion, and it will defend itself.
That word, invasion, came straight from Addis Ababa today, and it is the most dangerous language between these two countries in years. Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 for ending the last war with Eritrea. Now his government is framing this as a fight it did not choose.
On the other side sits Isaias Afwerki in Asmara, one of the longest ruling leaders in Africa. These two armies fought together in Tigray only a few years ago. Today they are talking about each other as enemies again.
The Horn of Africa has over one hundred and twenty million people in Ethiopia alone, and the last border war between these neighbours killed tens of thousands. That is the history both capitals are staring at tonight.
