Nvidia agrees to buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, report says

BREAKING: Nvidia has reportedly agreed to buy open source AI platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, expanding deeper into the AI ecosystem.

Nvidia is reportedly buying Hugging Face for twelve point nine billion dollars.

The Information broke it, CNBC got a source to confirm the acquisition has been part of ongoing talks, and neither company is commenting yet. Hugging Face is where the open source AI world lives, the platform developers use to share and test models, and now the company that sells the chips wants to own the clubhouse too. Jensen Huang keeps saying Nvidia is a platform company, and this is what that looks like in practice.

The timing is interesting. Hugging Face had another suitor circling, a bank was already shopping the startup around, and CEO Clément Delangue just weathered a hacking incident he fixed, of all things, with an Nvidia version of a Chinese open model.

One company would now own the chips, the software, and the shelf every open model sits on. Regulators are going to read that sentence twice.
