BREAKING: Two high-speed trains, a Renfe and an Iryo, have collided in a rear-end crash between Mora and Orgaz in Spain, derailing two cars and suspending the Madrid-Andalusia line. Injuries are being assessed.

Two high-speed trains have collided in Spain this morning.

A Renfe service and an Iryo train crashed in a rear-end collision just after nine a. m. Local time, between the towns of Mora and Orgaz, south of Toledo. Both trains were travelling from Madrid to Seville. Two cars of the Iryo train derailed, and the entire Madrid to Andalusia high-speed line has been suspended.

The number of injured is still being assessed. The mayor of nearby Urda says emergency services asked him to prepare a sports hall to accommodate casualties, which tells you responders are planning for a significant number of people needing care.

Rail operator Adif has not yet said what caused one high-speed train to run into the back of another on one of Spain's busiest lines. That answer, when it comes, will matter to every passenger on that route.
