At least 20 missing at Grand Canyon after extreme flash flooding
BREAKING: At least 20 people missing after extreme flash flooding tears through the Grand Canyon, with dozens evacuated from a creek leading to the Colorado River.
At least twenty people are missing tonight at the Grand Canyon after extreme flash flooding tore through the park.
The water hit a creek that feeds into the Colorado River, and dozens of people had to be evacuated from that area. This is one of the most visited places in America, and in late August those canyon trails and creek beds are full of hikers and rafters. When a flash flood comes through terrain like that, the water rises in minutes and there is almost nowhere to climb.
You can see some of the damage here, debris and wreckage strewn along the riverbank where the flooding came through. Search teams are working the creek corridor down toward the Colorado River, and we're waiting on updates from the National Park Service.
For now the number that matters is twenty. Twenty people unaccounted for in one of the hardest search environments in the country, and night has fallen over the canyon.
