Bithumb Says Hackers Accessed Internal System, Leaking Personal Data
BREAKING: Bithumb, South Korea's second-largest crypto exchange, says hackers accessed an internal system and may have leaked customer personal data, as two other financial firms also report breaches.
Hackers got inside Bithumb, South Korea's second largest crypto exchange.
The company says an internal system was accessed and customer personal data may have been leaked. Names, contact details, the kind of information that doesn't come back once it's out. Bithumb handles millions of Korean customers, so even a partial leak is a very big deal in Seoul.
And here's what makes me sit up. Two other South Korean financial firms are reporting breaches at the same time. One exchange getting popped is a bad day. Three financial companies in the same window starts to look like a campaign, and Korean exchanges have been a favourite target of state-linked hacking groups for years.
No word yet on whether any funds moved, and Bithumb hasn't said how many customers are affected. That silence is the hardest fact in this story so far.
